The T-ISS “FIRE ISOLATOR” is a concept that was developed for isolating and fighting E.V. fires based on research and live testing.  It involves the T-ISS Isolator Blanket, Aerosol Units, Water Misting, and Firefighter Training.

As a general rule, it’s a well-known fact that there is no “one way” to fight an E.V. fire due to the fact that there are many different configurations and types of E.V.s. Depending on the make and model, there are different styles and shapes of Li-Ion batteries, and they are located in different parts of vehicles.

On initial arrival, the “FIRE ISOLATOR” is one proven way to effectively minimise the flames, heavy smoke and toxic off gassing, as well as isolate the EV fire from causing serious collateral damage to nearby vehicles and structures. This reduction improves visibility, and makes the fireground much safer for firefighting operations.

In short, the “FIRE ISOLATOR” is a proven concept to minimize collateral damage and control an EV fire, up to a point where it can safely be removed from the scene.

Note: A blanket alone WILL NOT kill the fire in a Li-Ion vehicle battery. The Li-Ion battery does not require oxygen to maintain a thermal runaway. However, the blanket will smother the vehicle of oxygen and isolate the fire outside of the Li-Ion battery.

The “FIRE ISOLATOR” blanket can be used on vehicles powered by Li-Ion batteries as well as gas and diesel powered engines.

Aerosol Units placed under the blanket interrupt the chemical chain reactions occurring in the flames, suppressing the fire. With these aerosol units, you can quickly get the temperature of the lithium battery fire down to around 200-300° C. (400 to 600° F). By spraying water over the blanket, it becomes more dense, and more sealed, which increases the effect of the aerosol units.

The T-ISS blanket has been tested to ASTM D6413 and the ISO EN 13501-1 Standard

It will withstand a temperature of 1200°C (2200°F) for 50 hours

It will withstand a maximum. temperature of over 1600° C. (2900°F)

ASTM D6413 is used to determine flame resistance of fabrics used to protect against both electric arc and flash fire hazards. This is the defining test method for compliance with OSHA 1910.269 and one of the most commonly used tests on flame resistant fabrics.
